Common Enemies[]
Original name: コウモリ (蝙蝠, Kōmori)/裏コウモリ (裏蝙蝠, Ura Kōmori)
Encountered in most areas of the game. Usually they hang on ceilings and start flying around when disturbed. Their movement is hard to predict and they are not easy to hit. Often encountered in large numbers, they can be a menace, though they don't deal much damage. Typically blue colored, they can become a real problem against blue backgrounds, where they are hard to impossible to see. The Front- and Backside bats look different but function the same.
Original name: スケルトン (Sukeruton)/スカルトン (Sukaruton)/スキルトン (Sukiruton)
White, wandering remains of humans roam some parts of the ruins. They usually move back and forth in a straight line and their attacks and strength differ from area to area. Skeletons are usually easy to defeat: Hit them once to make them fall down, hit them a couple of times more to destroy them. The Skulleton variant can toss bones in an arc, while the most dangerous Skilleton may fire a spray of three bones at once. If Lemeza possesses the Perfume then all variants can be defeated in one hit.
Enemies on the Surface[]
Original name: アックスヘッド (Akkusuheddo)
These blue snakes roam parts of the Surface. They do nothing but move back and forth (speeding up when approaching player) and are easy to defeat.
Cockatrice ("Castlevania Birds")
Original name: コカトリス (Kokatorisu)
Grey birds found on the Surface. They usually sit around doing nothing unless the player comes near them. Then they fly up and start attacking by divebombing. Nicknamed Castlevania Birds by the one and only, DeceasedCrab. They appear to have a moderately high drop rate for weights.
Original name: ヒル (蛭, Hiru)
Little pink things that fall from the sky and bounce once before falling off the screen. A minor annoyance.
Original name: コンドル (Kondoru)
A few of those giant white birds can be encountered on the Surface.
Enemies in the Guidance Gate[]
Original name: ミルメコレオ (Mirumekoreo)
These brown creatures resemble ants with a lions head. They are found only in the Guidance Gate. Moving back and forth in straight lines, they pose only little threat, but they like to hang out in cramped places, where they can be a hindrance.
Original name: トグ (Togu)
Huge yellow blobs of slime, which are produced by background faces. They fall down and start moving back and forth. Unlike most enemies, they don't stop when the ground ends and just walk over the edge. However, they can't move upwards. These monsters are mostly found in the Guidance Gate and the Mausoleum of the Giants.
Original name: トビハナアルキ (Tobihana-aruki)
Blue creatures, first encountered in the Guidance Gate. They move by leaping around. and can even jump to a lower or higher platform, passing through the obstacle.
Original name: コダマネズミ (小玉鼠, Kodama-nezumi)
These red creatues move back and forth relatively fast. When the player gets near them, they start glowing and explode in diagonal projectiles. They tend to gather in the Guidance Gate around important places.
Original name: ソウル (Sōru)
A swirling object that looks similar to a red and blue yin-yang symbol. If the player walks too close, the soul will split off into two parts, ricocheting around the room. If the player is currently carrying the Cross item, then this enemy will pass harmlessly through you, doing no damage. They can be found in the Guidance Gate, the Graveyard of the Giants, the Temple of Moonlight, the Maze of Galious area, and Hell Temple. Souls will only appear when you have the Bronze Mirror.

Original name: アスピック (Asupikku)
Red snakes that move around and leap-attack Lemeza when he comes near them.

Mudmen are the first race of Mother's children and can mostly be found in the Chamber of Birth. Very few of them appear in the Confusion Gate. They look like yellow humanoids and spawn continuously from the mudman-shaped holes in the walls. Sometimes they teleport. Mud Men do not spawn until the Flywheel is collected.
Enemies in the Mausoleum of the Giants[]
Original name: ゴースト (Gōsuto)
Ghosts can be found in the Mausoleum_of_the_Giants. They float around and can become very annoying, especially because they return after being "killed".
Original name: ロックハンド (Rokku-hando)
These stone fists patrol some areas in the Mausoleum_of_the_Giants. They move slowly but will charge at the player as soon as they notice him. Early in the game, when Lemeza has little health, they can be a major threat.

Teikou ("Flying Butt Monster")
Original name: テイコウ (帝鴻, Teikō)
So called because it looks exactly like a flying butt. It can be found in the Graveyard of the Giants.
Original name: カリアッハ (Kariahha)
A sorcerer who teleports around the area, sending out volleys of ice in a starburst pattern. Can be found in the Graveyard of the Giants.
Original name: ハクタク (白澤, Hakutaku)
These enemies look like a dog or wolf of ice and are found in the Graveyard of the Giants. They move around pretty slow, but be careful when they start flashing! Only moments later they will release a circle of icy projectiles.
Original name: ケセランパラサン (Keseran Parasan) (not ケサランパサラン, Kesaran Pasaran)
Big white, puffy things that float around in the Graveyard of the Giants. They do nothing but get in the way. If the player swings a weapon at one and misses, the gust will blow it a short distance away.
Enemies in the Temple of the Sun[]
Original name: ケイトシー (Keito Shī)
A cat balancing on a ball (hence the nickname), which lives in the Temple of the Sun. It moves back and forth and can move up slopes. The actual name comes from Celtic mythology.
Original name: ベンヌ (Bennu)
A blue birdlike creature living in the Temple of the Sun. It usually flies around, dropping red projectiles. Sometimes it lands and starts walking around.
Original name: ヘッジ (Hejji)
A blue creature with a spiky back that spins around. Usually encountered in the Temple of the Sun. It is probably based on Sonic the Hedgehog (as its name, color, and behavior suggest).

These red lizards move over the background in their designated home, where they are well-camouflaged. They can make jumping sequences difficult when they get in the way.
Original name: アヌビス (Anubisu)
The egyptian god of the dead is found in only two or four (depending on if you've twice read the tablet at Mausoleum of the Giants D-1) rooms in the entire game. Unless Lemeza holds the Book of the Dead, Anubis will constantly drain his life away. The only way to escape Anubis's wrath is to (a) kill all Anubis enemies on the screen, (b) leave the screen, or (c) in the case of Temple of Moonlight rooms A-2 and B-3, never cause Anubis to appear.
Original name: サンドワーム (Sando-wāmu)
White worm-like creatures that move on the ground. They will dig into the ground on occasion and reappear somewhere else in the room, spilling dirt all over.
Original name: スライム (Suraimu)
Tiny red balls of slime that crawl around. They attack Lemeza by jumping on him when he gets in range. Their small size makes them hard to hit.

Original name: 魚人 (Gyonin)
A type of fishman that walks back and forth, convulsing occasionally due to difficulty breathing.
Original name: 魚人様 (Gyonin-sama, Mr. Gyonin)
A red Gyonin capable of shooting bubbles. They are said to "have an iron pipe filled with oxygen in their crotch". They instantly implode upon Lemeza entering the room once Mr. Gyonin Himself has been defeated.
Water Reaper ("Surprise Fish")
Original name: ウォーターリーパー (Wōtā-rīpā)
A legendarily annoying enemy in La-Mulana that will attack the player by leaping out of waterfalls. Found in the Spring of the Sky. A sparkling spot in a waterfall indicates a lurking Surprise Fish.
Original name: ヒッポカンプ (Hippokampu)
These white, horse-like fish monsters swim around in some pools in the Spring of the Sky. They chase after Lemeza when he enters the water.

Enemies in the Tower of the Goddess[]
Original name: アンドラス (Andorasu)
A creature that looks like a flying monkey or cat riding a dog. If the dog is killed, Andras will fly around the room and shoot sparkling projectiles at the player. Found in the Tower of the Goddess.
Original name: キュクロプス (Kyukuropusu)
A lumbering creature with one eye that can be found in the Tower of the Goddess. After sustaining enough damage, the body disappears and the eye begins to fly around independently.
Original name: ヴィマーナ (Vimāna)
Flying palaces or chariots in Hindu and Sanskrit mythology, here they are giant flying turrets stuffed with firepower. They move up and down, stopping frequently to shoot at Lemeza. Thankfully only few of those monstrosities are encountered in the Tower of the Goddess. Less thankfully, they are always encountered in pairs and have some annoying Bats as helpers. Keeping appearing Chonchons in mind, this meeting can become quite frustrating.
Original name: チョンチョン (Chonchon)
Flying heads haunting the Tower of the Goddess. They appear after a while when Lemeza stays in a room for a certain (short) amount of time. Identical in function to the infamous Medusa Heads of the Castlevania series.
Original name: アバオアクー (A Bao A Kū)
These creatures can be found in the Tower of the Goddess. Unless Lemeza holds the Eye of Truth, they are invisible to him and can be a nasty surprise when doing a complicated jump.
Enemies in the Inferno Cavern[]
Original name: カコウジュウ (火光獣, Kakōjū)
A flaming enemy that walks back and forth in the Inferno Cavern, sometimes spitting out small flames from itself that stick to the ground for a short period of time.
Original name: キラーロック (Kirā Rokku)
A floating pink crystalline formation that homes in on the player in the Inferno Cavern and the Graveyard of the Giants.
Original name: 溶岩岩 (Yōgan-iwa)
These glowing balls of molten stone erupt from the lava in the Inferno Cavern. A nasty surprise for anyone attempting a jump over the pits.

Original name: フェニックス (Fenikkusu)
A flying enemy that gathers in threes and swoops down on the player. Can be found in the Tower of Ruin. Practices law in certain parts of California.
Original name: ブラックドッグ (Burakku Doggu)
Black dog-like enemies running around in the Tower of Ruin. They move fast, jump and are not easy to defeat. They resemble the black panther enemies from Castlevania.
Original name: スカイフィッシュ (Sukai-fisshu)
These strange creatures can be found in the part of the Tower of Ruin where Nu Wa resides. They move so fast that even freezing time will only slow them down. Unless you have the Lamp of Time, these monsters are impossible see. They are still possible to hit if you're lucky.
Original name: ダーキニー (Dākinī)
One of the three fairies of the Medicine quest. She guards the Red Medicine.
Original name: ルサリィ (Rusarī)
One of the three fairies of the Medicine quest. Appearing as a ring of seven fairies, she guards the Yellow medicine.
Original name: ヤクシィ (Yakushi)
One of the three fairies of the Medicine quest, who is said to beguile men. She guards the Green Medicine.
Original name: サラマンダ (Saramanda)
A red fire lizard which moves slowly on the floor. It sometimes turns into a flame and floats in the screen, and into a lizard form again when it finds another floor.
Original name: サンダーバード (Sandābādo)
Despite its large size and the fact that it only exists in one room, the Thunderbird is a normal enemy and respawns, unlike sub-bosses. It flies around and releases a bolt of lightning downwards on occasion.
Enemies in the Chamber of Extinction[]
Original name: ナーガ (Nāga)
A large turquoise cobra that can hurl its spear at the player. Found in the Chamber of Extinction.
Original name: ガルダ (Garuda)
A white bird that flies up at the top of a room before pausing to dive-bomb Lemeza. Found in the Dimensional Corridor, the Chamber of Extinction and Hell Temple.
Original name: ブロッブ (Burobbu)
Blobs are an even less advanced form of Mud Men, being only mud hands that form from the ground. They can be found in the Chamber of Extinction. As long as they hide underground they can not be killed.
Original name: マンドレイク (Mandoreiku)
A green, somewhat humanoid plant that goes into and floats out of the ground at intervals. Found in the Chamber of Extinction, the Maze of Galious level, and Hell Temple.
Original name: スプリガン (Supurigan)
A living statue. If attacked, he will awaken and slowly walk forward, shooting balls of energy. Attack him again to put him to sleep. While asleep his head can be used as a platform.

These creatures resemble elephants and live in the Chamber of Birth, where they will often climb ladders that they walk by.

These red human shaped enemies appear from nothing to jump kick the player in the Chamber of Birth and Hell Temple. When they land, they disappear to try anew. Their movement makes them hard to hit, they move fast and can become a major annoyance.

These floating enemies look much like a wizard flying around and throwing scythes in some areas, mainly the Chamber of Birth and Hell Temple.
Giant creatures that live in the walls of the Chamber of Birth. They attack by flipping the wall section behind which they are hiding and shoot projectiles at Lemeza. After a while, they flip the wall and hide again.

Original name: セイレーン (Seirēn)
A bird with the head of a woman and a beautiful singing voice, similar to the Harpy from Greek mythology. Her music notes spread out and can deal damage to the player. Found in the Twin Labyrinths.
Original name: ケイテン (刑天, Keiten)
A bizarre-looking enemy that is all face, with a shield and a small torch. When hit, it speeds up. It can be found in the Twin Labyrinths.

They have found a place they like in the Twin Labyrinths, where they crawl around. They are rather flat, and thus require downward-attacking weapons to hit them if you're standing on the same level as they are.
Enemies in the Endless Corridor[]
Original name: ジュウのセンオウのシ (戎の宣王の尸, Jū-no Sen'ō-no Shi)
A headless horse that can grow to "twice the size of a human or as small as a rabbit." They can only be harmed when they're smaller or bigger than the player and can be found in the Endless Corridor.
Original name: フシギハナモドキ (Fushigi-hana-modoki)
This flower-like enemy can be found in the Endless Corridor and sprays out projectiles.
Original name: ボナコン (Bonakon)
These enemies bear a resemblance to alpacas or guanacos and walk back and forth in the Endless Corridor. Occasionally they will stop, lift up their tails, and, uh..."spray" across the room, which should be avoided. Not only is it gross, it is also potentially fatal.[1]

These Zombies are found only in the Endless Corridor, where they hop around. They are slow and easy to defeat.

These small turquoise flying demons fire lasers in every direction when they pause. They can be found in the Dimensional Corridor and Hell Temple.

Devils live in the Dimensional Corridor and resemble a blue skull wearing a crown. They scuttle back and forth like crabs, and shoot scythe-like projectiles every so often.

Blue gargoyle-like enemies that appear in the Dimensional Corridor and the True Shrine of the Mother. They walk back and forth, sometimes stopping to release a jet of fire from their mouth.

So named because they resemble smaller versions of The Boss. These blue slimy fellows are crawling around and throwing bombs in Hell Temple. They resemble Naramura's avatar.
